Westgate Strategy Canvas

Individual / Live Workshop Guide

Run one continuous, facilitator-controlled Strategy Canvas session.

Five-stage Individual and Live Workshop journey

Best for: Individual strategic work, leadership retreats, planning meetings, and facilitator-led workshops where the group contributes together.

Before the session

  1. Confirm company information and choose Live Workshop / Individual.
  2. Identify decision-makers and everyone whose input is needed.
  3. Choose the facilitator and the person recording contributions.
  4. Open the Primer and explain the purpose of a Strategy Canvas.
  5. Set the expectation that the workshop is about customer value and strategic choice—not defending current activity.

Facilitation principles

  • Keep every participant’s initial input before consolidating.
  • Ask what customers value and compare—not only what the company sells.
  • Include alternatives, internal solutions, and doing nothing.
  • Separate evidence from opinion.
  • Do not let the loudest voice determine the ratings.
  • Look for a curve that reveals where the company can compete less directly.

For a group of 8–10 people, expect approximately 24–50 initial notes. Similar ideas are consolidated later.

Live Workshop dashboard and five-stage workflow
A Live Workshop uses one facilitator-controlled session to move the group through the complete five-stage workflow.

1. Capture Value Ideas and competition

Record three to five Value Ideas per participant when possible. Capture the language first; edit and consolidate only after the group has contributed. Include named competitors and broader alternatives such as agencies, certified advisors, fractional specialists, internal teams, self-service tools, and nonconsumption.

2. Approve Value Offerings and Competitive Groups

Use the AI comparison as a facilitator aid—not an automatic answer. Strong Value Offerings express customer value, are broad enough to matter strategically, remain distinct enough to rate independently, and avoid internal jargon. Strong Competitive Groups represent meaningfully different customer choices and preserve named companies for research without confusing them with strategic groups.

3. Rate the curves

Rate the company and every Competitive Group from 0 to 10 on every Value Offering. Ask the group to rate the current customer experience honestly. When opinions differ, discuss the evidence rather than averaging away an important disagreement.

4. Review the results

Review Value Offerings, Competitive Groups, company ratings, and competitor ratings. Make corrections before approval. The chart should make both the existing competitive pattern and the strategic opportunity understandable.

5. Strategy Center and reports

Preview the Strategy Canvas charts and notes before publishing. Once the Canvas is approved, request the Strategy Report, Insights and Actions. The report adds external research, competitive evidence, customer language, priorities, ownership, measures, and a 90–220 Day Strategic Action Plan. Review the draft before publication; a draft is not a published report.

Completed Live Workshop Strategy Report preview
After the approved Canvas is submitted, the Facilitator reviews the complete Strategy Report draft before publication.

Completion checklist

  • The group considered customer value rather than only internal capabilities.
  • All important alternatives are represented.
  • Value Offerings and Competitive Groups were approved before ratings.
  • Ratings reflect the current market honestly.
  • The final curve suggests a defensible Uncontested Market Position.
  • Charts and notes were previewed before publication.
  • The Strategy Report draft was reviewed before the final report was published.

Your Deliverable

Once the Strategy Canvas is submitted, Westgate Marketing conducts comprehensive market and competitive research, analyzes the approved Canvas and workshop evidence, and compiles the findings into a Strategy Report, Insights and Action Plan. The Company Facilitator reviews the draft before publication, and participants receive access after it is approved.
